In my role as a Parent Coordinator (PC) and Decision Maker (DM), I help divorced parents that are engaged in chronic conflict, move towards a more cooperative and less litigious co-parenting relationship that focuses on the best interest of their child/children.
Nationally, the Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts offers guidelines for the training and function of a PC/DM. In Colorado, the role of the Parent Coordinator (PC) is defined by CRS 14-10-128.1. The PC is appointed in post-decree matters to assist parties in developing more effective communication skills. Through joint decision making, the parties implement existing court orders. A PC cannot make decisions and cannot change current existing court orders.
Often, the professional who is appointed to be the PC will also be appointed via court order to serve as a Decision Maker (DM) for the parties as well. The role of the DM is outlined in CRS 14-10-128.3. Family Courts appoint DM's after an order has been issued regarding parenting time. The DM role is to assist the parties in making minor decisions which serve to clarify or assist in the implementation of the court order.
The PC/DM role is often combined, however such must be explicitly stated in the court order.
